Keys & Coins Andean-Style Hat (Pattern)
[H-KEYS]
$6.00

Keys & Coins Hat by LynnHThese hats take a cue from Andean “chullo” styles and motifs. The originals use many yarns and tiny stitches; these bow to tradition but use modern techniques, gauge and materials.

Choose a color-changing yarn and a contrasting solid color. Make ear flaps, or do not. Shorten for a beanie. Make your own style.

Use one solid yarn and one slowly self-changing yarn, and knit this Andean-inspired hat. Earflaps are optional but oh-so-warm.

Knit brim-up, in the round, with small optional I-cord nib at top. Optional flaps knit in an authentically-inspired method, sewn on after knitting. Knit fewer key motifs, without earflaps or nib, for a beanie style.

Gauge: 4.5 st/in.
Sizes: Newborn-Infant, Toddler, Child/Adult Sm., Adult Med., Adult L-XL. To fit heads 14.25–16", 16–17.75", 17.75–19.75", 19.5–21.75", 21.25–23.75" (36–40.5, 40.5–45, 45–50, 49.5–55, 54–60.5 cm).
Needle Size: 1 set (of five) size 4.5 mm / 7 US Double-Pointed Needles (DPNs) at least 7" long, (or adjust needle size to achieve gauge); optional circular needles, same needle size with cable 12–16" (smallest size use 14" or smaller, or use DPNs; largest size will be more comfy started on circulars). Consider size 9 Ndls for colorwork only.
Notions: Large-eyed needle; (1) stitch marker for optional ear flaps, (1) ndl size 3–5 US for flaps.
Yarn: MC (Main Color), 1 (1, 1, 1, 1) 50gm ball of slowly self-striping yarn. Heavy worsted/Aran-weight, worsted weight, or lofty DK-weight, appx. 95–138 yd to 50gm.;
CC (Contrasting Color), 1 (1, 1, 1, 1) 50gm ball of solid or mostly-solid yarn. Aran-weight to worsted-weight, appx. 95–110 yd to 50gm.
